In Latin, the word "January" means "door" or "gate."
As the word's origin indicates, this first month of 2011 gives us the opportunity to start anew, with a fresh perspective and a new outlook.
For personal transformation to come in 2011, we cannot continue to cling to our old mindsets. Instead, we need to see things from a new perspective - one that tells us that good things are possible through hard work and personal responsibility.
In this new year, do you still find yourself thinking that some of the goals you want to achieve are impossible? Stop now, and consider ways that you can transform your thinking to a perspective that, instead, emphasizes the idea that "I'm not impossible! I'm possible."
What are your goals for this year? Do you want to graduate from high school? Earn your GED? Go back to college? Start a new business? Earn a promotion? Strengthen your family life? Start a non-profit organization? Replace old, unhealthy habits and relationships with new ones that bring you physical, spiritual, and emotional health?
Whatever your goal, word it in a clear, positive way. Don't use hedge words and phrases like “I’m going to try to” or “I’m going to think about maybe ....” Instead, speak positively about the doors that you are going to walk through this year. Think, “In 2011, I will .... And here is how!”
Together, 2011 can be the year we walk through the gate together and leave “impossible” behind, trading it with the positive, transformational, “I’m possible!”
