“If you want to reach a goal, you must ‘see the reaching’ in your own mind before you actually arrive at your goal.” – Zig Ziglar
How can I reach my goals?
This is a question we are asked frequently, as we travel the country working with students, parents, non-profit organization leaders and others.
When we are asked this question, we often find that we need to do more listening than talking. That’s because the truth is, a big part of reaching your goals is being able to see yourself reaching them. And that vision needs to be a clear, detailed one.
We find that some people have very vague goals. Maybe they want to be “a writer” or they want to “become big in the entertainment industry.” These goals sound good on the surface, but the truth is that the owners of these dreams need to ask themselves more questions before they are ready to move forward.
Other people have far more detailed visions and dreams. These people, for example, don’t just want to be “writers” – they know exactly what type of material they want to write. They understand the market that exists for their writing. And they know how their own talents fit into their goals, where they are strong and where they need to improve.
So, as you consider your dreams, think about how clear your vision for the future is. What is it that you want to achieve? What will it look like when you achieve that goal? How will you get there? Who do you want and need there alongside you?
From there, you are ready to move forward and act!
